  • July 8: RMF Board Meeting at 6:00 PM. Members are welcome to attend any board meeting. Check with a Board Member for the meeting location and/or agenda.
  • July 11: Brookies Galore! Let's Go Fishing!
This is my very most favorite and relaxing fishing trip I take every year. The Colorado River in Rocky Mountain National Park takes on an entirely different character as its headwaters transition from the flat openness of the Kawuneeche Valley into it's gradual incline amid the cool shadows cast by towering spruce and pines. As you gain gradual elevation these headwaters narrow and acquire an exciting mystique. Each of its endless meanders holds a new scene and challenge…and far above its upper reaches eventually pass the historic Lulu City gold and silver mining town's ghostly remains enroute—its origin below 11,184'.

    Fish on!
Fish on! Brookie on the line.
One can't walk these banks without reflecting upon the history that unfolded along these same banks a hundred years ago. And then suddenly you turn your head to see a deer or moose striding off across yet another small meadow into the trees edge. What a wonderland; every bend holds a new scene, a new allure, a new mystery that your imagination helplessly creates. These historic lower elevation headwaters are such an easy walk that it never becomes tiring. Along your stroll you’ll be traversing beneath the peaks of the Never Summer Range whose spine boasts the Continental Divide. And it's almost surreal as I enjoy the quiet walk back downstream, drinking in again the feelings I'd experienced every time as I’ve revisited these familiar scenes. Bring your camera.

I've personally experienced all of these feelings on this my absolute favorite stretch of pristine, Colorado mountain stream. For me, it offers the essence of fly fishing's romance with nature. Oh, yes, I almost forgot to mention…you might also have a 45-50 fish day, not to mention all the spine tingling misses that wriggle off your hook…gloriously colorful brookies, and even an occasional cutt as you gradually wade higher.

Details: 7:00am carpools depart (riders share gas expenses to the drivers); pack for lunch on the water. Option to stop in Estes Park for dinner on the return.

Equipment, flies recommendations offered before departure. Contact Dennis Cook.

    We’ve got greenbacks

Join Rocky Mountain Flycasters, Trout Unlimited, the U.S. Forest Service, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife volunteers to help stock Greenback Cutthroat Trout in the East Fork of Roaring Creek in the Cache la Poudre watershed!

Volunteers will hike fish in backpacks (recommended 45L+) for 6-9 miles round-trip in steep, rugged terrain (sometimes off-trail). You must be comfortable and experienced hiking long distances in rough terrain. If this project is not for you, there will be other opportunities at different sites in the future.

    * This project is rated as HIGHLY STRENUOUS
** Due to COVID19, volunteers will be required to follow established social distancing and safety guidelines. Each group of 5-9 volunteers will arrive at different times to help spread out groups. Please check your tickets and follow-up emails for specific details and protocols.

2019 Camper locates a brown trout in the Poudre
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and Trout Unlimited’s recommendation for continued social distancing, This year’s Youth Fly Fishing Day Camp has been cancelled.

The summer of 2020, we will sponsor our 11th Annual non-resident camp, running from July 27 through August 1, 2020. Our Youth Outreach Camp is an intense six day program for fifteen students to learn about resource conservation and about fly fishing. It is also a great opportunity to volunteer to ensure that the next generation continues to care for the cold water resources as we do. Application process begins early March 2020 and details will be available early in the year.
  • July 28: 2020 NoCo Youth Fly Fishing
    Day Camp
CANCELLED from July 27 through August 1.
  • July 29: Poudre Headwaters Research ProjectPHP Field Research
    Poudre Headwaters Field Research

Rocky Mountain Flycasters volunteers are providing field support to a Poudre Headwaters (PHP) research project headed up by Dr. Kanno with Colorado State University. The research will help support the PHP in two key areas. First, PIT tag implementation of existing Brook Trout will help monitor upstream movement thus providing essential information for designing effective barriers. Second, collection of spatial population data using genetic analysis of existing Brook Trout will help identify habitat connectivity on a landscape scale. Both activities go hand in hand to help design and implement effective barriers to isolate cutthroat trout populations over the long-term.

The sites for July 29 are Forrester and Sand Creeks.

Note of the Day:

Many rivers and streams in the Colorado River Basin have become fragmented over the years, preventing fish movement and degrading habitat. We’re working with local partners on win-win projects that both open up river habitat and address infrastructure problems.
